Attorney Spotlight: Brian Coughlin

Director Brian Coughlin joined the firm in March 2007. Brian specializes in matters of criminal justice, as well as internal investigations, personal injury, wrongful death, and professional licensing.

One of Northeast Florida’s promising young leaders, he has been repeatedly recognized for his excellence in criminal defense by Super Lawyers and in Florida Trend’s Legal Elite. Brian is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America (Corporate Compliance Law and Criminal Defense: General Practice).

Brian’s peers in the legal community rank him at the highest level of professional excellence for legal knowledge, communication skills and ethical standards.

Background

Brian attended the University of Michigan and graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in political science. He then attended the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law and graduated with his Juris Doctorate in 2003.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Brian went on to serve as an Assistant State Attorney for the State of Florida in Jacksonville for three years. He joined the Bedell Law Firm in 2007. In August of 2012, at 35 years of age, Brian was made a partner in the firm.

Brian is married, and his wife Susie is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Columbia University. The couple has three children.

Accomplishments

From 2016–2017, Brian served as chairperson of The Florida Bar Professional Ethics Committee. He now serves on The Florida Bar Juvenile Court Rules Committee and is a current member of the Board of Governors of the Jacksonville Bar Association.

Brian regularly contributes industry thought leadership through columns submitted to the Jacksonville Daily Record and in speaking engagements with The Florida Bar.

Community Involvement

Like many at the firm, Brian is an active member of community organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation, whose mission is to help families tackle childhood cancer by providing comprehensive financial, emotional and practical support.

Brian is also on the Board of Directors for the Community Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation, as well as the Board of Trustees for Daniel Kids, an organization whose mission is to improve the lives of children and families in the Jacksonville area.
