In commemoration of Jacksonville’s Great Fire, the Bedell Firm sponsored the Great Fire Run, hosted by the Jacksonville Historical Society. The event was held May 1 and recognized the 120th anniversary of the fire which destroyed most of downtown Jacksonville on May 3, 1901.

Great Fire Run participating Bedell Firm team members included:

  1. David Barksdale
  2. Hank Coxe – Finished 1st in age group
  3. Erica Cruzat
  4. Gem Davis
  5. Gwandos Ward
  6. Jennifer Griffis

The race followed the outline of the Great Fire boundary, which began at Davis and Beaver Streets, spread to most of downtown Jacksonville, and was halted by Hogan’s Creek. This devastating fire destroyed most of Jacksonville’s buildings, including the library. After Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie agreed to donate $50,000 toward the construction of a new library, Carnegie Library was constructed and served as Jacksonville’s main library branch from 1905 until 1965. The Jacksonville Library Building became home to the Bedell Firm in 1984. Learn more about the Bedell Firm building here.

The Bedell Firm recently celebrated a 155-year milestone and is the oldest law firm in continuous existence in Florida. The firm has long been a supporter of the Jacksonville Historical Society given its history and dedication to the city. Learn more about the firm’s history.
